The number three most blogged about New York Times article is an article called "In Shift, U.S. Says Marriage Act Blocks Gay Rights." It discusses how the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act discriminates against gay marriages. The Defense of Marriage Act was put into law under President Clinton and defines marriage as solely the union of man and woman. This act deprives homosexuals of living equally. President Obama and his government are now refusing to defend this law. President Obama does not particullary support gay marriages, however, this shows that Obama's views of supporting gay marriage are growing and may possibly be shifted in the future. What do you think of Obama's decision to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act?

Obama is, I believe, taking a big step in choosing not to defend gay marriages. It is of course a sensitive topic in which politicians understand they have to be carful about what they say. Whether Obama outright admits to be pro or anti homosexuals, one side will favor against him. I think it is daring of Obama to not defend this law, however it does represent the society in which we live in today.
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough issue. Regardless of my personal opinion, it is difficult for me to understand how America, the FREE country could deprive people of what they have deemed appropriate for themselves when it is not at the expense of anyone else.
